Rc cars! Wroom wroom! Found my ancient rc car I had as a child and have started taking it apart and assembling it again, while slowly getting into the hobby again.

Right now it’s knitting and electronics - working on a deep blue shawl with sparkling beads in the pattern of a star chart, and wiring and coding up a pair of motion-reactive light-up pole dancing heels for my wife, fun stuff ❤️

Gaming. Went back and 100%ed a few games like Neon White, Exit 8, Omori, and Space Marine and my god did it feel good. I think this is what got me out of my depressive episode/alcoholism. Hopefully this time I won’t relapse.

I’m playing around with some lidar data obtained from shuttle missions. The visualisations of landscapes are dope.

Qgis has a great plugin for turning DEMs into 3d printable STL objects! If you play around with the vertical exaggeration, depending on how much elevation change the terrain has, you can print some AMAZING things!

If you can get yourself a cheap 3d printer this is an excellent add-on to your hobby :)

Emulation. I set up ShadPS4 on my Linux machine and i’ve been playing around with that. I’ve also been playing with RPCS3. Also fuck AI, but it’s cool finally being able to play P.T. on my PC. I don’t like vibe coding but there’s something poetic about folks using AI tools from a billion dollar company to decompile and port games made by another billion dollar company.

I mean, I’ve been super hyped about Avatar Seven Havens since I first heard about it. So I am kinda impatiently waiting for the final episodes of book 1.

I personally love the fact that they added India tones to the show to really give off a more distinct vibe from the previous 2 shows in the series. Also really like the art style and music choice. Story has me pumped to see how they manage to keep things going. Especially as we very slowly learn about Korra.

Spoilers Ahead! Click At Your Own Peril!

I also like that throughout the season up until episode 8/9 they avoid having am Amon or fire lord or some other known overarching villain who is seen as a major threat to everyone who is a big focus of the season. No big evil bad person to have to deal with by the end of a season, which feels refreshing. As much as I enjoy Korra, that’s one thing that kinda drags it down just a little for me, so I hope they don’t screw that up.

Good choice to have Nisha run out of the Haven, IMO, so they can hopefully focus less on the Faceless and their queen being this books Amon. As much as I kinda wanna see them being taken down, I think something much more interesting would be seeing them throughout the books travel to the other Havens and recruit benders and ultimately have them all end up traveling to Republic Forest in the end… only to realize it’s not as safe as they thought. Only to end up meeting Nisha and Pavi and realize that the Avatar is their last hope and their freedom.

As various people have pointed out in comments on reaction videos I’ve seen, Agam having been hinted throughout the season as the Faceless queen is a nice touch. I personally never expected for a single moment that she could have been their leader, let alone a bender herself. Always fun to have characters sneakily set up to be a surprise villain!

So yeah, I’m kinda invested in the show, if you couldn’t already tell.

I’ve been watching it with my kids, and I’ve been thoroughly enjoying it! Being half Indian myself, it’s definitely cool to see more representation than just Guru Pathik (though I did love him)

    Reticulum/Nomad net.

Reticulum is a network that can run over regular internet, bare WiFi, long range radio, even a serial cable. No central server, secure by default, works on slow/unreliable lines.

NomadNet is an app that runs on it that is reminiscent of the pre-netscape internet days. Text sites, no javascript. If you dig in deep enough, you can make your own games/chat bots/host offline Wikipedia and display images using ascii style art or even half tone text blocks.

I’ve gotten really into MeshCore with my local mesh and radio nerds. We have a network that is able to send messages over 300 miles away.

yeah, i live in a hole with no one owning anything higher than our houses. Neighbors have no interest. I have no LOS to anything but them.

Really want to get to the kids school which is less than a mile, but RLOS is a no-go. two people own high ground in the middle.

No water towers, just power company and cell phone and those are two placed i don’t wish to fuck with.

Computers! After ~15 years as a professional software developer, I have gotten so burnt out, but this week I had so much fun coding for myself. I made a website: sloptrough.art, its not much but it’s very gratifying to have hosted it on my own hardware with raw html & JavaScript. I’m using proxmox, a hypervisor, to run OpenBSD which is running apache server. As OSs go, OpenBSD is paradoxically complex and unintuitive (command-line first, by enthusiasts for enthusiasts) yet also user-friendly and approachable (there are breadcrumbs down a path of well-written manual pages; I haven’t had to google at all).

Also, woodworking: i turned a pallet into garden storage to help clean up the patio

I did a rewrite of my personal website either earlier this year or last year, and it was so addicting! I couldn’t stop working on it.

Yeah, I describe OpenBSD as very easy… for those already who are already quite familiar with Unix.

Very nice for setting up quick servers.

I’ve gotten back into the original nerdy interest: reading! Right now, I’m reading The Three Musketeers, and it is so much more entertaining than sitting around and scrolling.

Not answering the question but I feel its more about simple things than nerdy things. Things that do not have large cost or to hard to get. The exception being when the chase is what gives the enjoyment like collecting.

    Getting more into the BSDs.

I have OpenBSD as a desktop on a laptop I have and it’s great.

Also wanting to get back into retrocomputing.

If it only was a bit more power efficient I’d use it on my old laptop. FreeBSD was a bit better, but still not quite there.
