AI doesn’t just mean LLMs, what is the specific “AI” used in this system? Planes are already mostly run by autopilots, which is a form of AI just most people don’t call it that
Why would you call autopilots AI?
As far as I know, autopilots are a (fairly complicated) series of checks and responses. They are coded explicitly and their behavior is “white box” (you can explain every element. That’s not what’s AI is about, where training is “black box” and not deterministic.
For sure, hence under funny rather than a serious community.
Honestly this admin will probably get the FAA to hook up ChatGPT with an MCP of the radar and a tool to make ATC calls on the radio. After all this is almost exactly what they did with intel for the Iran war.
If this is true, I love that it’s DC. A major DC airport devolving into chaos from AI slop is one of the few things that could get our useless congress people to pass some regulations.
They’ve been having fatal mid-air collisions there for a while now and still aren’t doing shit. So I’m not sure we can expect much.
It’s totally acceptable to land a plane on another plane that is landing on the runway. Pilots call this “Mama duckin it” and it’s been used since the Middle Ages.
