Not sure if I understood everything correctly, could someone with more knowledge elaborate?

    what I see:

    • black pawn hasn’t moved yet, able to do 2 steps
    • black currently in check, pawn will resolve this.
    • any move white makes after, will make them lose at least bishop and rook?
    • then checkmate white?

EDIT: i think i forgot something on the way

I’m no chess player but I think the joke is white can checkmate black through en passant, which is exceptionally rare.

SparroHawc is correct. En passant captures the opposing pawn, opening bishop’s path to G6.

Doesn’t that put the king in check? So the king can’t move there.

Then RxH8+, but unless I’m missing something, king can still move to G5, right? So it’s not mate (yet)

Bishop will be covering that square, because en passant would open up the bishop’s path.

edit : me dumbass, only thought about taking with the e pawn and not the g pawn.

h6 is a dark square, the white player’s bishop is a light square bishop.

Sorry, I was commenting about one step earlier - checkmate happens the moment en passant is played, because black’s F pawn is gone and white’s E pawn is now at F6, leaving the path open for the bishop.

If white responds with en passant (using the e pawn) it’s checkmate.
