I think an argument is only as strong as its weakest link, and if I’m going to argue this with other people, I need to understand how well the argument holds up under pressure. Which I think is best done through prodding at weak points. No intention to offend.

It definitely looks a lot like the SS symbol, no doubt about. Probably too much to be coincidence. But higher resolution pictures of the patch (assuming it’s the same patch) show that it is not literally the SS symbol:
