I discovered this after upgrading our instance yesterday, which also upgraded all frontends to their latest versions as well. After I did, our Tesseract frontend stopped working and I noticed immediately as it’s been my primary for a while. Initially I thought it was an API version mismatch, but no, it was much worse.

Someone pointed out that the developer of the frontend added an explicit hidden and unmodifiably blacklist which includes any and all instances to the left of Kissinger. There’s a commit which also explains their specious reasoning about our instance specifically, as it seems we’ve been on their shit list for a bit longer than that.

This instance and its admin staff encourages identity politics, groupthink, mob mentality, and extremist solutions to societal problems. Users who advocate violence are not moderated so long as the admins agree with the target. Caution and critical thinking are advised when interacting with this instance or its users.

When you use tesseract to connect to one blacklisted such instance , you just get a message informing you that Tesseract is “incompatible with that instance” which leads one to think of a technical issue, like an API mismatch, rather than the dev being an opinionated coward.

Isn’t it funny how all the software developed by turbolibs, like Piefed and Tesseract, end up with hidden control mechanisms from developers who think they know better than everyone else? That they don’t just think they deserve to tell you what you should think, but they should manipulate you to think it? Isn’t it funny how libs go on about how bad it is to support lemmy due to the ideology of the devs behind it, and yet lemmy has 0 opinions as a software? It does make one think…

Anyway, I forked - it as one does - and disabled the blacklist, but since this is a massively ideologically compromised software, I’ll doubt I’ll keep this frontend up after Lemmy 1.0. I think we’ll bring up mlmym again now that someone’s maintaining it again.

Because the criticisms aren’t relevant to the objections being discussed? The blocks are happening inside the code without the user being aware. Maybe if it was a setting (even enabled by default) to use a “recommended blocklist” then it would make sense to dig in to why something or someone was blocked.

Well, they’re radical about their genders. Gender is dangerous. You know, to their social order at least. Also lots of organic chemistry involved, and we all know that shit’s cursed.

Hey you speak for your damn self. We’re making ALL the frogs gay!

It’s literally the pot calling the kettle black. Because we (trans people) believe in introspection, gender studies, biology, scientific methods, harm reduction, and can connect all these things, it conflicts with what people who don’t think. It comes down to immovable ignorance and misattributing through that ignorance, and they see us though a freaky fetishist rhetoric cynic lens. We end up being extreme difference alien extremist idealogists, and therefore different and must be a threat to their current worldview. And honestly, yeah. If you’re so stuck in trad bullshit that you stand in the way of progress and then claim “science” but then exact hate and oppression of humanity while aligning with the Nazis, then yeah, we are your enemy in every aspect of the word. We just wanna live our lives and love and be loved by our families and build communities and be happy. But in order to do that, APPARENTLY, some shit’s gotta change. Stop beating your wives, stop abusing your kids, read more, actually listen to people when they tell you something hurts, be more human, have empathy for people. We got told the future is hopeful and bright for everybody. We realized it isn’t that way. We figured out some ways it could be better. We aren’t perfect and are all human, just like everybody else. We literally all want the same thing, unless you’re a freaky hater rapist murderer racist piece of shit human. WHY are there SO MANY of those??? How do we help people? First step is accepting and understanding ourselves, and to do that, sometimes we need to listen to others who are also trying to understand THEMselves. We (everybody) aren’t that smart, and because of that, we have to continually try to be better, to ourselves and to others. And that takes effort and energy and time and patience. It takes examination of our biases, drilling down on “why” and researching history. And once you start doing that, shit gets a lot clearer. Not crystal clear, but definitely clearer. I still don’t understand why people get stuck on hate, but I know it makes me really, really sad when I lose a friend to it. It makes me sad when I talk to somebody I haven’t in a long time, and they hit me with angry, super stupid political rhetoric that illustrates how far down the fascist hole they’ve fallen. It’s always from a point of self confidence, pain, and a sense of overcoming intellectual adversity. But it’s always ignorance and needing belonging, resulting in hurting others.

I’m rambling because I’m tired of it. I’m also just tired in general. A lifetime of it all really wears you out and makes it hard to recover. Less friends, less family, less government, less rights, people talking you down everywhere, the constant considering and strategy. I’m tired. So tired. I do think we’re all gonna make it, but like db0 said, “we aren’t pacifists”, we just… I dunno, trans people are the tanks I guess. Politicians are the dps, everyday people speaking out in support are the support. I don’t want to be a tank, I want to be a normal person. I want to be a game dev and have friends and go visit my family. But I can’t do that anymore, so I must fight for the chance at maybe my younger siblings to have a chance at that future.

And if that makes me an extremist… I don’t think so. But if somebody does, then yeah, fine, I guess we can have beef.

Somebody else in here commented that they couldn’t stand the jokes and memes and stuff. And honestly, fuck that person. It all hurts. Of course it does. But we have to keep going and not give in to the hate. Otherwise… We lose everything. Identity politics, culture war… More like rights to life and love and freedom and equality. Losing civil rights weekly in 2026 is crazy. Defunding scientific progress and research. Everything is politicized against us now. We can’t even get a passport anymore. I can get executed for using the restroom in public. I get side eyed by every dad and verbally assaulted by the drunk ones. My offense? Walking in public on a sidewalk, in the evening, back from the grocery store.

I hope all fascists die in a fire. And now you have a better idea why.

I’m tired. I’m going to bed in hopes that things will be better tomorrow.

Yeah, we were banned in the initial wave of “unsupported instances” in March here.

Seems like db0 was upgraded from being allowed with a content warning to fully blocked in April with the commit linked in the op.

I would appear asimon04 changed their name to paulo-roger. It appears they are trying to remove some of their repo from public view. But git doesn’t remove data just because it’s orphaned.

Here are some updated links, these might be good for another week before git does GC.

I thought Admiral Patrick “”“left”“” lemmy more than a year ago?

I think a bit of a problem with the fediverse might be that the majority of instance admins are just barely competent enough with development that if they get upset with how other admins run their shit, they end up forking some piece of the project in order to put their thumb on the scale and bend the network to better fit their worldview.

This bullshit is starting to feel like a bit of a pattern.

Also seems to include queer instances like blahaj.zone, which is… Interesting. Blahaj is pretty tame I think as far as leftist politics goes, but is explicitly a trans instance, so I can’t help but think that’s the reason they are being blocked.

Also, I have never seen this app, but is it useful at all? If there is any value, would it be worth it to fork it and make a better version with the hidden blocklist removed?

Itself is a fork of the photon frontend, so ultimately it’s not as important to fork it imho. I liked using it because it integrated the fediseer and had some tweaks I liked, but the dev’s actions and opinionated design eclipsed those benefits.

      • I tried Photon and it doesn’t have as many functions as Tesseract does. Viewing a user’s modlog is more tedious, and banning user from communities is much more tedious. If Photon were updated to make its actions as smooth and easy as Tesseract then I would agree, but I wouldn’t want to be left without Tesseract as a mod unless there was an effort to bring some of its feaures and functionality to Photon and I don’t even care about the extra stuff like Fediseer integration of MBFC.

Just being able to view user modlogs easily or take action against them clicking on their profile would be all I would need:

A similar context menu for communities would be nice as well:

Having easy access to all these options makes moderation easier, which is why I use tesseract for moderation. Photon doesn’t provide this for me though, at least not in its current state.

I blocked a lot of them because I’m not a fan of seeing the same shit page after page. For instance the flood of selfies recently.

But deciding what a user does and doesn’t want on their feed should be the user’s decision, not some sneaky hidden bullshit pulled by the world’s lamest dev.

I agree. People who do this are emotionally compromised and in my opinion can’t be trusted when writing code. There was a different developer who through similar political convictions made his software wipe PCs that were in Russia or Belarus. Maybe that seems more extreme but it comes from the same politically charged and emotionally compromised place.

Amazing how these projects keep killing themselves by alienating huge portions of their userbase. Hard to survive in a FOSS environment by being extremely reactionary.
