I don’t know that I would consider myself a furry, but I will forever and ever be grateful to the furry community for making porn and embracing diversity.

I grew up in a hyper-zealous Christian household—like the kind that buried guns in the woods for the coming race war. I was legitimately afraid when I realized I might not be cis and straight. I couldn’t even let myself look at anything other than lesbian porn because I was worried I’d find something out and be in like actual danger.

And that’s when I discovered furry porn. In that really weird place in my life I rationalized it as, “Well this isn’t gay because they’re not real and also it’s like anthro stuff. This doesn’t threaten my cis hetero masculinity at all!” Furries are also where I first learned about HRT and that bisexuality wasn’t just a punchline in 2000’s comedies.

I know that’s not like the ideal path to self-actualization or whatever, but it was an outlet for me to think about myself despite all the indoctrination and self-hatred and fear and everything else pre-teen me struggled with and I don’t know that I would be as happy as I am today without having found their community.
