If you’re going to post a paywalled article, it’s considered good practice to either post the text of the article as well, or post an archive link.
Reader mode also bypasses the paywall, but not every browser has it.
This sucks for all involved.
The girl and her family hit by a tragedy out of their control.
The driver who didn’t even know he hit her, had to assume it was safe because of traffic management was in place.
The failure is highlighted in the article; the coroners findings:
“However, it must not be forgotten, Ms Dawson’s death has illustrated system-level errors in the implementation of a vehicle-centric temporary traffic management plan which did not clearly communicate to road users where cyclists should ride and did not provide satisfactory options for cyclists.”
I see this sort of thing all the time. Construction crew shows up and blocks the bike lane. Cars get pylons and flag crews, but bikes get either grass/sidewalk or merge with traffic. And if you choose either you have to be very careful that you don’t get creamed.
I get so fucking sick of bike lanes being an afterthought. Like signs just plopped down right in the lane like it’s free real estate.
