Hello Sopuli,
We have quite a few communities that have been abandoned / moderator has abandoned fediverse, so we are looking for moderators who would like to adopt some of these communities.
For the communities that we don’t find any people to moderate we will add a sticky post with information on how to adopt these communities and hopefully redirect people to an active community that has a somewhat similar purpose/topic.
List of communities below:
Hei Sopuli,
Meillä on melko paljon yhteisöjä, jotka on hylätty / moderaattori on lähtenyt fediversestä, joten etsimme moderaattoreita jotka haluaisivat ottaa joitakin näistä yhteisöistä hoitaakseen.
Yhteisöihin, joihin emme löydä moderaattoreita, laitamme pystyyn postauksen jossa selitetään miten kyseisen yhteisön voi ottaa hoitaakseen ja ohjaamme postauksessa käyttäjät samankaltaiseen, aktiivisempaan yhteisöön.

I’d be happy to take over Spanish if that’s okay
It’s more than okay, thanks for stepping up! If you could make a post there I’ll appoint you as a mod right after.
Done btw!
And you are a mod now, thanks!
I’d be happy to take over [email protected]. I hadn’t realized there was a sopuli community for it, or I would have already been sharing some interesting articles there. I made a post here.
I’d also be happy to help as a moderator for [email protected]. I don’t have as much to contribute there, but I’ve always enjoyed following that community. It might be better to have a lead mod there that is more active within the community though, so if anyone else wants that position I’d be happy to concede it to them. I have a comment here.
A lot of the smaller communities here sound really interesting as well, but are completely devoid of posts. I agree with some of the other comments here that I think those communities should be retired, let someone else restart them later if they’re motivated to foster a new community.
Okilly dokilly, I’ll add you as a moderator for those two communities.
oops, sorry I dropped off the face of the earth. I was meaning to add another mod on anarchychess anyway since I’m not that active. [email protected] needs a new mod as well, i’ll go make a post
Ah sweet, that’d be nice. Hope you are okay and hope you don’t mind a new mod on anarchychess.
Would appreciate if you can look for mods on the comm itself as this post was mostly triggered by increase in reported activity.
As there’s no rush on these things I suppose I’ll step up and try to do my best with [email protected]. Post mentioning this already in place.
Thanks for stepping up! I personally also took up [email protected] even though I no longer live there.
I’d also like to remind you all of donating to Lemmy’s developers, whether it’s via Patreon, Liberapay, crypto or other methods. They work full-time to make this brilliant open-source software, and as there are no ads, donating is the only way to ensure it.
Thanks for your work maintaining this instance!
Lemmy’s developers are tankie transphobes. And if you’re gonna say it’s only Nutomic, I’m gonna retort that the rest of them put up with that cryptofascist. They don’t deserve a cent until they shut down lemmy.ml.
And since QuentinCallaghan (I guess) is too modest to bang his own drum, there’s patreon link for Sopuli instance itself on FAQ.
Happy to take on [email protected]
Sounds good! Make a post there and we’ll make you a mod
Done! Cheers
And you are a mod there now, thanks!
edit: too many a’s
Can’t take any more communities sorry, but if it’s possible/wanted, [email protected] could be consolidated with [email protected], the only active arab community as of now. No pressure, just an idea.
[email protected] while unmoderated, does look interesting. I’ll keep an eye on posts (if there are any lol) thanks!
That would be totally fine! No point in having a dead community if there is one with atleast low activity, so we can make a sticky post there and redirect to dbzer0’s community!
I’ll write a similar post to all the redirect posts in a bit and then add it to the arab community on sopuli :)
Between these, I can take on the Termux community!
Sounds good, make a post there and we’ll make it happen!
I know something I can post that can helpful, but I need to be at home for it
You can do that and notify me, or you can just make a hello post for now if you prefer. Either way, let me know :)
Hello! I did a simple post. Didn’t find the time.
I wanted to make one big guide post about setting up Termux as an almost fully features Linux environment. Online guides can be spread out.
No worries, small posts are also what make up a community! Thanks for pitching in, you have been appointed a mod in that community few seconds ago.
edit: meant to say big posts are awesome, but small posts are also nice!
Thank you!
What would it entail? I’ve moderated on other platforms before but not on the fediverse :)
I guess it would be similar! Just making sure the community follows sopuli’s instance rules at minimum :)
You can of course additionally have your own community rules and enforce them.
Cool! Do you have a link to the sopuli instance rules?
If you use the default web-UI you should see them in our instance sidebar on the main page, if you use an app it varies where you see them. But you can always just go to sopuli.xyz via a browser and you should have it right there in the sidebar, below some general info :)
Edit: right below the sopuli mascot image in the sidebar
I wouldn’t mind modding [email protected], although it doesn’t seem very active :P
Same for [email protected]
Edit: 1000 communities and someone asked for spanish before me. Dang.
Ah @[email protected] beat you to it, but I’m sure you two could share the moderation if DigitalAudio agrees, what say @[email protected]?
But atheism for sure, thanks for stepping up! Could you make a post there so I can appoint you as a mod :)
What can I say? Us Spanish speakers love our own language.
I’ve made a post! It’s fine if they want to keep Spanish. I offered because I’m from Spain, so no language barrier lol.
Hey fair enough, I’m also a native so we’re aligned there lol
Done. And that’s yeah just noticed in your bio! I think they might appreciate a native hanging in the community :)
Edit: no need of course, moderating one community can be quite a task on its own
Football on Sopuli is active and has got active mods already (they migrated from .ee). You may already close Soccer and redirect to Football.
Ah I missed this! Thanks for pointing it out! I’ll add a redirect from soccer.
I think the Fediverse/Lemmyverse needs a general solution or protocol to handle this situation. I would like to see a canned plan for what will happen to these communities if they aren’t claimed, and a timeline for when.
I think there needs to be some means of archiving abandoned communities so that they become read-only, but are still indexed and searchable on the fediverse (there might be perfectly good information and history that we want to preserve for future denizens of the Fediverse (fedizens?).
Then in the future, if someone comes along and tries to make a new community with the same name on the same instance, either:
- The old community gets revived under new management, or
- The old community posts remain read-only, perhaps all old posts get “versioned” or “generationed” in some way so that it’s clear they happened under prior management, but are included in the history of the new community that is “masking” its name.
I like some version of option 2, personally.
The problem of random communities coming and going over time will never end for lemmy, and for the future of the fediverse I think it’s important we come up with a solution that doesn’t involve either making ad-hoc requests for new leadership or deleting the communities entirely.
Just my two cents, thanks again for your efforts!
Edit: I notice some of these communities are literally empty. I feel like those should just be autodeleted after a certain amount of time. It’s basically the same as if the mod never made it.
Very good write up, and I mostly agree.
I’m not part of lemmy development and haven’t closely followed Pyfed development but I believe there has been some discussion around this. Especially since some communities that are indexed on sopuli are from instances that have shut down.
The reason why we went with “if anyone wants to pick up a community, here they are” and “we are adding a permanent redirect to abandoned communities” is because we noticed that some communities are indeed low activity but “high” subscriber count. We kinda wanted to offer new users answers for their searches: e.g. if they search for a soccer community - that currently exists but is empty - they find the community with a redirect to football community.
But you are right that this isn’t a very good permanent solution and I am also hoping for a native lemmy feature for this problem.
Thanks for the thoughts! We’ll have to discuss the possibility of just deleting the empty communities like you suggested.
Edit: we decided to remove some dead communities entirely and we’ll further discuss which ones could be just deleted.
For the communities that we don’t find any people to moderate we will add a sticky post with information on how to adopt these communities and hopefully redirect people to an active community that has a somewhat similar purpose/topic.
There seems to be quite a few completely empty communities on that list and while they have some subscribers I don’t think it’s worthwhile to keep them around. At least for random few I checked there’s already alternatives on other instances with same name so at least I don’t see any value on keeping an empty shell just in case.
A very good observation. The user who created bunch of communities that are completely empty also created some communities that will probably never have any real use case. At least I don’t believe there will be any use for a dead community named “cocaine”.
I’ll discuss this, thanks for your input!
I’d like to take Netflix and Linux Mint, I’ve made posts on both just now.
thanks for your help in the other post!
Done, done, and no problem :) thanks for stepping up!
I’d also like to mention that there’s a rather active linux4noobs community on programming.dev if you’d like to redirect there
The community on sopuli seems empty, I’ll add a redirect. Thanks for the tip!
I’m surprised there are this many communities on Sopuli.
I checked out 10 that I might be interested in and none of them had posts during the last year, some of them never.
Yeah many of the listed were created by the same user who just created a lot of communities and disappeared shortly after.
We will probably remove those which are completely empty and which won’t find a moderator (or post a redirect to a more active equivalent and lock the community for now).

Hyvin huomattu, kiitos! Korjaan.
