A healthy and sustainable planet means supporting action based on scientific evidence, not misinforming people with catchy phrases and political rhetoric, writes Dal's Tony Walker and colleague Miriam Diamond.

This is a great article from Dalhousie University.

Justin Trudeau tried to reduce the use of single use plastics. He faced enormous political backlash. Danielle Smith, the powerful leader of Alberta, denounced him on social media. Every single day.

Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative Party, campaigned on defending plastics:

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/poilievre-scrap-plastics-ban-1.7514037

Poilievre claimed that the federal Plastics ban was inflicting financial pain on Canadian families

Evidence‑based solutions are indeed under political fire.

These assholes’ calculus somehow adds up to: financial pain > lasting physical harm and death.

I can spend it when I’m dead! I CAN spend it when I’m dead. I CAN SPEND IT WHEN I’M DEAD!!!

Minor financial pain now loses more votes in the next election than physical harm and death sometime after that election, I believe is the actual calculus.
