Australian Federal Election Day
Discussion about the federal election is allowed and encouraged.
Criticism about candidates, parties and pundits are all welcome.
Don’t be afraid to use the report function, a screenshot if you feel the need to.
Keep it civil and if you disagree with another user, you can either disagree with them courteously or simply down-vote and not reply.
Is it safe to come out now?
I think it is. Antony Green has called it
such a swing is amazing
I’ve been really stressed for a lot of reasons (general fear of Australia choosing to be smaller and meaner and personal because I work in a environmentally/renewables aligned job that would be massively at risk) . I feel better. I hope a few of the climate aligned independents get in to hold them to account.
shared hugs 😭
now for our friends in America to get rid of of the republicans in the mid terms next year , only 22 % of Americans voted for trump. the vast majority do not want him
Yeah. I have been talking to a bunch of colleagues in the US lately & it’s tough. They are not their government. I am just so glad we didn’t go that way.
I feel a good life is possible , with opportunities and fairness, for the young seagoons , and all aussies 😭
i would not have had that feeling if the libs got in
we need to better manage our natural resources and taxation and then we will be gold like scandinavia
Happy voting day, everyone. Eat your sausage

Happy Birthday!
I have put in towards your present, hopefully enough other people can contribute too and get your wish.
Yay, thank you!!!
I’ve done my part!
Thank god I voted early. I woke up feeling both barrels of the New Sickness one of the boys has. To top it off, he didn’t want me in the bed with him after I gave him medicine after 1am so I went and slept on the couch.
Last thing I’d want to do whilst sick and after a terrible sleep is my civic duty.
I voted early so I wouldn’t have to wait long on the day, then I went with someone who didn’t vote early and spent over an hour in line with them anyway.
Damn, the worst of both worlds.
Same here, even though the line was longer than I thought I feel like complete rubbish at the moment.
I haven’t voted on election day for the last couple. And I haven’t done it in Melbourne. I’d hate to see how long it would take here when absentee voting took so long in the country.
Damn, it was called early. What happened? I thought it was going to be a close one.
Dutton happened :)
And he loses his seat too, nothing better.
I stupidly only numbered 5 instead of 6 above the line in the Senate. Is my vote counted?
Even if I numbered 6, I risked exhausting my vote since I did not number Lab or Lib anywhere. One really should number as many as possible.
I was told the other week by a regular AEC worker that they still count votes like that if the intent is clear and if it isn’t a practical issue for the vote like the last missing.
Like the last missing?
He was pretty adamant that it would be included, so long as the preference flow didn’t go to that round.
Not sure with the Senate tho, that was about the lower house.
It’ll still count afaik
Although my intention was clear I don’t think my vote will count. This is what the AEC says when I practice, numbering only 5 boxes.
I was hoping it would just say “you risk your vote being exhausted”.
And in the section on “vote saving provisions” it says:
For Senate ballot papers the requirement for a formal vote is that when voting above the line, at least the numbers 1 to 6 shall be marked in the squares on the ballot paper (see subsection 239(2)).
For voting below the line, the requirement is that at least the numbers 1 to 12 are marked in the squares printed on the ballot paper (see subsection 239(1)). However, there is a vote savings measure that can operate where only one square is marked above the line (see section 269), or where voting below the line, at least six squares have been marked 1 to 6 using consecutive numbers (see section 268A).
Oops well, my bad. There’s always next election 😂
Quote from page 14 of the “Ballot paper formality guidelines” published by the AEC on 14 August 2023:
Senate guidelines
Consecutive sequence of numbers – Above the line
For an above the line vote (ATL), voters are instructed to consecutively number at least 6 boxes above the black line, in the order of their preference, commencing with the number ‘1’.
[…]
However, where a voter consecutively numbers fewer than 6 boxes, (including only one box with a first preference) the ballot paper will still be formal, but will exhaust after the last consecutive number. In other words, if you only numbered 5 boxes above the line it does still count, it just exhausts sooner.
Their practice voting tool has sensibly omitted the finer details, they always encourage people to vote “correctly”.
Regardless of you definitely won’t make the same mistake next time I’m sure.
Ah so I was right ah ha!
That’s all I’m taking away from this 😂
Your faith in bureaucracy being sensible was correct…
this time.
Thanks a lot. I am just one insignificant vote but it has bothered me disproportionately all afternoon.
Dad’s involved in the counting for Kooyong. Obviously he’s limited to very simple communications, but he sounds like he’s having a ball
I’m very interested in the results for kooyong tbh
My first choice of polling booth had no democracy sausages so of course I left to find another with them.
The entrance to this polling booth is quite narrow so I got assaulted with how to vote pamphlets on entry with nowhere to run.
Mine had run out of sausages when I got there at 1pm. Undemocratic I reckon.
voting done, no sossage, safe labor seat, no liberal canvassers
ewaste taken to drop off centre
bunnings run done, got paint for furniture, semi gloss kara sea colour and some new brushes
walk down beach , today there was a bloke in a straw boater hat standing out on the sand flats playing guitar to his dog
a little bit of gardening done
time for coffee and a little lunch
Antony has just called it.
Labor wins government, possibly with a large majority.
He what. This soon?
Peter Dutton looks to be out of his seat.
This soon indeed!
Majority government is good, they might actually get some shit done. The LNP will be very weak, like in Vic, which isn’t actually great for democracy going forward, but maybe it’ll convince them that they need to be less super right wing and they’ll ultimately end up as a more moderate party. Maybe.
Agree, a democracy needs a competent opposition to keep government accountable, regardless of which side is in power. I hope the libs choose someone more centrist and less thug for the next leader. I feel like their party has become stacked with more extreme right wingers over the last decade so probably unlikely.
As I said earlier, voters are never wrong. They can’t be.
If the far right bull isn’t something voters respond to, they’ll have to change if they ever want to win those votes back
Things have been going almost comically far right with the Libs in recent years so I hope this is finally the wake up call for them (although tbh I’d rather hope they die and there’s more smaller parties that rise up from the ashes)
Victoria needs a new second party, would be nice to have a Vic only party instead of another federal organisation in Victoria.
Well, there is Victorian Socialists if people wouldn’t be too put off by them
I have some very, very negative experiences with them man. I tried, I really did but maybe they’ve changed over the last 5 years.
I was more involved with them last election, I ended up being booth captain at one of the sites. Everything was pretty chill and they all seemed good. I’ve only dropped off because I had the boys.
For some totally non-election related discussion: what is your preferred style of bed? I’m seeing a lot of fabric covered bed heads around, and I really don’t like that idea from a cleaning/hygiene perspective.
I’m looking at a dark stained wood frame bed, a fairly minimal design with raised legs and no footboard. My current bed is nearly 30 years old, the options have changed considerably since then.
Am also a fan of minimalist wood frame. Latex mattress to seal the deal.
Generally whatever has been $50-$100 bucks on gumtree. Mostly some kind of wood number. Head, foot, rails and slats. Were I to buy something I’d be looking at included storage.
Some years ago my dream would have been to have every cm of space under the bed usable for storage, possibly with a bookshelf headboard too. These days I’m trying to be more minimalist, plus I have more room in general, so I’m prioritising a more open design that lets my pets wander freely underneath.
Woodframe all the way. Fabric heads scream hotel to me, and I want the storage and ventilation of a non solid base. And no need for those hideous frilly things.
As for frame, I’m strongly against fabric bases, horrible for mold.
Personally I’d go 100% metal base, maybe stained wood if I could guarantee mold free.
I can’t say I’ve ever had mould on my wood furniture. I have had a metal base which was cheaply made and bent after very little use, so I’m a bit wary of metal frames. It was when I was a teenager and money was pretty tight, Mum managed to buy my sister and I new bed frames to replace the tatty second hand wood ones we’d had since we first moved into full beds, and within a year they had both broken and we ended up sleeping on matresses on the floor for a few years.
Fabric headboards are a complete pain to keep clean, especially if you have pets. The amount of hair that accumulates is mindblowing, and I worry about fleas/bedbugs etc. as they’re impossible to wash or clean properly. I have a wrought iron decorative head & foot, with sturdy iron rails holding them apart and sturdy slats. Its quite tall - mid thigh when standing next to it, but the underbed space holds my two spare guest mattresses easily and more besides.
Slats are a major point of failure in cheap beds, so if you get a Cpt Snooze or Fantastic Furniture bed, replace the slats with tongue & groove boards laid a little apart for ventilation. This also prevents cats from climbing up into the mattress from below and getting squashed by the coils (if any).
Well it’s done. I didn’t have to wait as long as I thought for the result. I was thinking Labour would win, but thought it would be a narrower result. I can rest easy tonight, and hopefully wake up to news Dutton has lost his seat.
No waiting needed then! What an embarrassment for their campaign, leader looses his seat. Hopefully they will take a serious look at the direction the party has gone in and realise it’s not what Australia wants.
Fuck yeah!!! Antony Green called it for Labor and WA has barely closed lmao
Antony Green said it so it’s true!
