Organic Maps is an awesome FOSS mobile map application, it’s being forked because the shareholders of the company that “owns” Organic Maps haven’t been very transparent.
Thanks for the context. I hope it works out one way or the other. I switched to OM from Big Tech just a short while ago.
Me too, I really like it! The matrix group of the community volunteers gives me hope that we can continue to use it under better licensing.

PSA: there is already a FOSS OSM maps client that predates Organic Maps by a decade and is much more powerful. It’s called OsmAnd.
Personally I wish all you guys would get with the FOSS spirit and pool your efforts a bit more instead of forking things every two years and reinventing the wheel. A good maps app is a hard challenge, there’s not room for 10 of them.
OsmAnd puts essential features behind a paywall, like unlimited map downloads and CarPlay support.
Development costs money. It’s all open source. Osmand is great.

If you download it from the Fdroid store, then you can download unlimited maps and Android Auto works. I don’t use CarPlay.AFAIK there is no Fdroid for iOS. I wish there was an equivalent though, now that Apple is supposed to allow 3rd party app stores in the EU.
You use apple and complain about an open source app not being for free?

Apple charges developers to publish their apps. It makes sense they wanted some back.

I disagree. They both serve a different part of the market. OsmAnd is a heavy tool with thousands of features, Organic Maps is a lightweight tool for more general users. Both approaches have (dis)advantages.
@pietervdvn @JubilantJaguar i used both of them last week. Organic Maps for general fast overview over public transport and Osmand for predefined filters and layers. Different use cases. Osmand is kind of overkill to switch settings when you are on the run, Organic Maps misses some settings but is perfect for orientation. Love both ♥️

Idk, I feel like it should be something that rolls off the tongue. Something easy to search and not awkward to recommend irl. Sucks because Organic Maps was pretty good in both those cases
OpenStreetMap is the registered trademark of OSM Foundation, and they ask to please don’t use mixed and confusing names like some of these for related projects. From the Trademark Policy:
You may not:
abbreviate the wordmarks, combine them with other words (“OpenStreetMapThing”), or substitute words in the mark (“OpenStreetThing” or “OpenThingMap”), especially where the new combination sounds similar to OpenStreetMap.
While they usually allow the use for open projects, it would be just easier to respect the request of the Foundation.

We share a small amount of hope that the shareholders of OM give up the trademark of the name, but sadly I don’t think it will happen.
