Why would the government mandate backdoors? This is at best security through obscurity and sooner or later someone will find the backdoor. And here I thought the US government was using something mathematically proven to be secure like AES and perhaps even using 256bit keys just to be safe against possible brute force attacks.

There’s newer algorithms now. Perhaps supercomputers have gotten fast enough to brute force AES. I took cryptography 20 years ago so I am out of date.
