Researchers have developed a groundbreaking technology using microorganisms to transform industrial CO2 emissions into useful products like fuels and chemicals. This method, distinct from traditional carbon capture, allows direct utilization of captured carbon, offering a more efficient and cost-
Interesting article, which gives some details. The capture is a standard one which concentrates co2 from a high concentration source to a higher concentration grouping. Hydrogen and bacteria provide carbon storage by turning it into useful ingredients to industrial processes. (We already have some, but getting it cheaper increases to number of co2 sources that will capture.
Overall I’m happy with this kind of research. However, the point I missed on the first read was acknowledging that it doesn’t come for free. They have to heat the first column which takes energy, and they need to provide hydrogen, which also takes energy. Still though, if development of this method will allow efficient removal of carbon from the atmosphere, great.
Both steps could be fuelled using renewable energy sources, I hope this will become a standard soon. I don’t really understand why hydrogen production is being done using fossil fuels tbh. Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, other than it probably being cheaper at the moment
Agree 100%.
