My parents had a washer/dryer combo(LG I think?) that required internet to work at all. They just connected it when they first got it and didn’t realize connectivity was required until there was an internet outage. They promptly replaced it with separate Maytags that’s so far seem to be pretty hardy.

100%!!! Gotta feed those shareholders pockets!
Adding to this: just call around to different repair shops for the product you’re shopping for and ask them. Not only might you get some great advice, but you’ll also get an idea of who to call when you do need their services. How they respond when they know you’re not spending any money is a pretty good indicator of their true customer service.
😮
I wear white wraparound sunglasses. Do the polarized rainbow gradient lenses help me?!? Or am I a lost cause?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Please help me under stand my spouse's gift and their hurt
43·4 days agoI’m the same way with things, but I do think you handled this poorly. When people do things like this for me, also knowing I’d prefer to keep what I have or fix it if it’s malfunctioning/broken, my response is usually something along the lines of: “Thank you! This will come in handy when I can no longer use the one I have now. I’ll keep this safe until then!”
As someone else pointed out, they probably had a very good reason for getting that for you. When my lady bought me a new cell phone and I said basically what I wrote above, her response was that while she understands my current phone works, it doesn’t always work well, and she’d like to have longer, more meaningful conversations with me while I’m out of town. I asked her what she meant, since I saw no problem with it. She said my current phone didn’t keep a charge very long and the microphone wasn’t great. I learned that she called me less often than she’d like to because she felt like having me repeat myself and having to stop my work to charge the phone while having our talks was a bother to me, so she figured this would fix both of those problems. I swapped the service to the new phone immediately. She was elated, I was happy she was happy, and honestly I have a great phone that lasted two days on a charge for over a year. I also rarely have to repeat myself now, and didn’t realize that I was, in fact, bothered having to repeat myself until I didn’t have to.
Win-win, but you’ll never know if you shut it down.
Shit! Look, I’m shocking at maths. Help me figure out how to give the man more of my hours.
I can’t do math; I thought this was good. Should I make more days or work more in the ones I already have?
This is the way! Bonus points if you set it up on a timer so that you can have your phone face down when it occurs, saving you from any suspicion.
You’re only working 7 days a week and 18 hours a day? Rookie numbers.
I created an extra day and work 20 hours in each of em. No wonder you pansies can’t afford health insurance.

Privacy@programming.dev•Most, if not all car companies collect and profile your data, how can I improve my privacy when buying a modern car?
151·5 days ago“We’ve detected a malfunctioning data transmitter… we meant sensor. To ensure our data mining… we meant your safety, the vehicle will not start until we can properly spy on you… we meant before the issue is corrected. Please tow the vehicle to your nearest mining facility… we meant dealer.”
And there would be less needless fatalities than with our current police force.
Don’t be daft. When an American dies their body is rearranged in the physical matrix and their consciousness is respawned elsewhere in the digital matrix. How else do you think that country keeps spawning so many new slaves to their machine?

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK this is the Southern part of the United States. Most people living in this area are extremely Christian. They also support Donald Trump
41·11 days agoAlso, why does The South have the worst people in so many countries?
I find this to be mostly untrue. I run into less horrible people per capita here than the other areas I’ve lived and traveled in(excluding Louisiana; they are their own brand of “fuck you.”)

Same. The majority of people I know cook at home, don’t even have a credit card let alone use one, have pretty old cars, homes and rentals that should be inexpensive, keep their same phone until it’s unusable. Pretty much every splurge they have is thanks to some amazing deal or find. And each year it gets harder and harder to save anything.
I also know a few people who regularly use food delivery services, live on pop and snack foods, refuse to learn to drive and get a cheap car making them reliant on either me(this is going to stop; I be damned tired) or Uber/Lyft(and they go to and leave from work at a very high traffic time making their rides more expensive), and they can’t seem to figure out why they don’t have any money.
I can see both sides of this coin, but if it is a two-sided coin, the first side I described is much bigger than the second.
