In the US, 75% of truck owners tow only once a year or less. Nearly 70% of them go off-road once a year or less. Additionally, 35% of truck owners haul something in their truck beds once a year or less

I imagine it’s pretty much the same in UK - a lot of the people using them for work might be better off with a small van.

But then, they don’t look ‘manly’ do they?

What does a van offer that a small truck wouldn’t? Other than opportunity for passengers. Since its a work vehicle passengers isn’t generally a concern since basically anything you can buy can handle atleast 2 people. Covered space? Get a cap. Need more Clearance for a fridge you intend on plugging in right away? take the cap off. Over sized item in more ways than one like a couch or bed? you can drop and remove the tailgate. I have yet to see a small van that can be all that customizable?

A much, much higher degree of safety. Because vans don’t typically have those absurdly high and long bonets that make it so you could run over multiple children without even seeing them there.

Gender affirming truck. But seriously, I will never ask someone to haul stuff for me. It’s like you didn’t buy a truck to haul my shit around. There are also seasons of life where a truck would be super useful. What I’m saying is I need a fucking truck you bitches.

A guy at work has a massive truck, and once had a bunch of bags of wood pellets delivered to the office.

As he wrangled a bunch of low level employees to help him load it all up, he exclaimed “I can fit two tons in the back of this!”

“I can have things delivered to my house” I replied.

It’s $100 minimum to get anything delivered from the hardware store a mile from my house. It’s $20 rent a pickup from U-haul for their 4 hour minimum. I do that maybe 4X per year. I drive a little electric car now, but when I had a Prius V (station wagon one) with the seats folded down I could fit as much in there as a light duty pickup.

That’s exactly what I do with my Forester. I live in a regional area of Australia so for me it’s a daily driver and great for long trips, and if I need to pick shit up, fold the seats down and I effectively have my ute.

I think there’s a significant part of American culture and mythology constructed around self-reliance. It is at the heart of the rage over socialism (that and anti-communist sentiment left-over from the Cold War), the hardcore prepper mindset, and pickup trucks.

When that is your identity logic doesn’t play into it, unfortunately.

Also, the prevalence of $100k+ vehicles is getting goddamn ridiculous.

Feeling good about my mid sized truck in the mountain west. Haul weekly, trailer monthly, off road monthly, at least (remote trailhead access)

I don’t know what I couldn’t do which would necessitate one of the huge new full sized trucks, aside from towing construction equipment or line a shit ton of welding gear or live stock. The number of people who do THAT must be microscopic

I get timber/PIR/plasterboard from the builders merchant, and also take that plus garden waste to the tip, 10+ times per year, in a 4 seat car that weighs under 1 tonne.

Anything truly massive, they just deliver it to me.

The day I discovered that a 2.4m 6*2 would fit inside was a very good day.
As was the one I bought roof bars.

I have 4 acres of land and I tow my mower down to my land every weekend to clean up. So I use my truck all the time for towing and I also haul things at least once a month. Not all truck owners do it just for the truck. If I didn’t need a truck I wouldn’t own one.

Which is why you aren’t the target of the meme. It’s the city dwellers who never leave the city but have a 2 ton pickup that barely fits in the narrower, low speed lanes in cities and take up 2-4 compact parking spots who are the target.

Because car infrastructure is totally dominant. There are some posts about advocating for busses, trains, or bike lanes. Most users are in the US though where car dependence is strongly built into the system.

You can only make so many posts saying how much better trains or busses are at moving people though. It gets old fast. There’s a lot more ways to joke about how much it sucks that we are required to use cars, and how shitty certain large vehicles in particular are.

Basically, trucks take up a disproportionate amount of our infrastructure budget and provide disproportionately little. If the same money was spent on infrastructure for car alternatives everyone would be better off. It sucks that society has prioritized them over everyone else.

A place to discuss problems of car centric infrastructure or how it hurts us all. Let’s explore the bad world of Cars!

From the sidebar. If you don’t like it, block the community instead of complaining and typing in full caps with excessive punctuation like some boomer on Facebook.

Jesus fuck, you didn’t have to go and insult me. The sidebar was enough but even then I still don’t understand wtf the point of the sub at all or why it’s constantly recommended to me. :/

I use a buncha caps and punctuation all the time cus im autistic, it’s in all my comments and posts; for me it’s like I’m putting my thoughts as they are on the screen. So if I wanna scream or emphasize somethin then I put it in all caps.

I don’t really like having to block whole ass communities like that, cus what if there IS an interesting post I see from there?? I like just being able to tell Lemmy “Hey, stop showing me this” instead of blocking.

And im not even complaining really I just:

        A. dont understand what this post is trying to tell me.

        B. what this has to do about cars being bad.

        C. Why fuckcars is the only one shown to me and not something else like Anti-child or Anti-work or anti-anything else.

And the sidebars are often useless compared to the actual behavior of the community. Scrolling the comments, it’s just a lotta people going “Yea I know a guy who ALWAYS drives his truck with stuff in it, fukin chump.” and some (Seemingly) sour attitudes towards truck drivers for carrying a buncha stuff in their trucks.

The TLDR: “I don’t understand the point of this place and since I can’t read, this place sucks.”

Every comment here is “Why do you wanna do that?!” And then it’d explained and they found down or ignore it.

Deadass the title is fuckcars. 90% of everyone here is complaining about something jerkass

Its always Anti-“Insert topic” subs that, when I ask why they exist and what’s the point, people immediately insult me instead of either going “Myeh we don’t all just hate on cars here, just specific things like ‘Insert specific things’” or just answering the question. Its always “WELL IF YA DON’T LIKE IT GET OUT!”

Maybe it is the caps, but I never badmouth anyone or anything when I ask, Im just super confused and wanna understand. But I get told to fuck off.

I wonder how these terms were defined. Off road as in a dirt road or on a beach where any normal vehicle could go? Haul something in the truck bed as in something that an SUV could fit, too? ‘Bout the only thing unique would be towing, that’s usually a truck job. Boat, trailer, whatever.

Modern SUVs are actually tiny, but look big, as far as I’ve seen here in Sweden. I’ve more then once parked next to a SUV I thought was big, then as I get out of my Volvo V70 I realise it’s very often just a Kia Picanto-esque car which had been raised, given a muffin top and ridiculously big wheels.

From my north american perspective, SUVs are getting bigger. Full size SUVs like a chevy suburban, toyota highlander, and even hyundai telluride are bigger than many older full sized trucks. The bumper heights are increasing and these SUVs are replacing the family minivan or hatchback to spend most of their lives just getting grocceries.

Over here the “biggest” suvs I regurally see are the size of VW Tiguan. I believe Volvos XC40 and XC60 are pretty popular amongst the richer crowd.

But the most common is probably Kia Sportage. The text book example of a SUV which is engineered to look big, but it’s actually not at all and is overall a very cheap car.

Volvo V70 used to be the most popular car over here, now we’ve all fallen for the SUV scam :(

Currently my family’s only vehicle is a Kia Sportage. At the time we had a Chevy Cruze that could not fit 2 rear facing car seats in bases in the back due to terrible design decisions, and also at the time my wife found herself commuting home on unplowed roads during the winter and bottoming out in the car so we went for the smallest most efficient SUV we could find and got it.

Since then we’ve not once needed to go out on unplowed roads due to a job change and a deer found itself rapidly in the engine compartment of the Cruze, so I really miss driving a sedan. We’re looking at another needs change very soon due to my work laying everyone off so I might be shopping for a sedan or a cute little hatchback very soon…

Little hatchbacks are awesome. Not sure about the details for fitting child car seats but my little hatchback can fit a full ice fishing sled with hut and enough gear to camp on ice for a few days. All my friends with big SUVs and trucks are blown away by the amount of gear that fits into my “clown car” as they call it.

Honestly I strongly suspect my car seat challenge was just another example of that car being a poorly designed POS. It had all sorts of bonkers design faults, like water bottle holders in the doors that were simply the wrong size to hold any kind of sealable bottle and too aggressively angled to hold an unsealed container of any kind

Another example was that the trunk was absolutely massive, but with the places things stuck down into the trunk and the gigantic lip at the bottom fitting anything bulky or awkward was next to impossible. Or the bright screen that used tons of blues in its design language and couldn’t be fully turned off while driving, and while it was a touchscreen, the angle to reach over and press anything even as a passenger was so awkward you’d just avoid using the touchscreen at all, but certain common actions required using the touchscreen to access

But yeah I love small cars, and someday I’ll probably import a Kei van or car because I would absolutely rock that, and it lends itself to the joke that you’re compensating for something with the super tiny car ;)

Depends on the SUV, and trucks can generally haul larger loads. I didn’t want to waste commentary pedantically covering every eventuality, and why I said “usually”.

I got a 2004 Silverado 1500 and I couldn’t be happier with it. It’s not a giant penile enhancement. Its just a normal sized truck. I use it as a daily driver and grocery getter. But when I need a truck to haul shit I got it.
