A representative system is supposed to represent the will of the people. Because people can change their mind, you try to hold regular free and fair elections.

Opinion surveys show North Carolina is an evenly divided state. So it should have 50% of Republican representatives and 50% Democratic representatives. At least that’s the theory.

However, North Carolina now has a lot of more republican congressmen.

Why ? Because the North Carolina legislature created an electoral map that reduces the number of democratic districts and increases the number of republican districts. They did this with the help of a billionaire businessman called Art Pope, who is the richest man in North Carolina.

The flawed electoral maps ensure the North Carolina Republican Party can stay in power, even if the majority of the North Carolina citizens votes against them. This also gives Republicans more seats in Congress, even if the majority of the citizens votes against them.

There are elections, but they are no longer free and fair.

The North Carolina Supreme Court could end this system, which is why they now want to throw votes out. They no longer want competitive elections.
